Duke in L.A. academic matters
Courses
The DULA program is a four course--normal course load semester featuring a combination of University of Southern California and Duke courses. Students register for two and a half Duke AMI courses--a seminar on the United States culture industries (FVD 121S), a half course entitled "Writing the Hollywood Cyber Journal" (FVD 124S) and an internship for credit (FVD 123). The seminar course counts toward Duke University's Writing course requirement for graduation. After consultation with the DULA Faculty Director, Jim Thompson, in the October preceding the program, students are enrolled for USC courses.
Two (6 units) of USC courses together with the Duke courses are the normal course load. At least one of the courses taken at USC must be in the School of Cinematic Arts, or the Annenberg School for Communication, the Thornton School of Music; the other may be taken in USC's general college. All courses taken at USC will appear on the Duke transcript.
Distinguished Class and Conference Visitors
The seminar course, FVD 121S, includes numerous opportunities for students to meet with professionals in the entertainment business. Past guests have included Adam Rifkin and Barbara Baines. Many of the guests are very willing to offer their assistance to the students as they consider their career choices.
Genre Matters Conference
The Duke in LA program concludes in early May with a one day conference prepared by the students and the Faculty Director. Students present their research papers to invited guests from the industry, Duke in LA alumni, and USC students and faculty.
Field Trips
Field trips are an integral part of the Duke in LA experience. Famous industry and Los Angeles cultural institutions, TV shows are included. The DULA program fee covers the cost of admissions.

The internship
DULA students pick their own internship positions to match their interests. The AMI staff and DULA faculty director are available to advise and provide guidance for the participants. The
Duke Career Center is another resource for tapping into the Duke alumni network. Many of our alumni are eager to help DULA students find a rewarding internship position. Internships are an important step in developing contacts in this competitive field.
