Duke in LA at a Glance
An information sheet for Spring 2009
Duke in LA is a Spring semester "abroad" for up to 18 undergraduates based at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles, California. Duke and non-Duke students are invited to apply. This four course, intensive academic and pre-professional training program is administered by the Duke University Film/Video/Digital Program. The 15-hour-per week internship with a business or organization of the student's choice counts as one of the courses. Students interested in film, televison, or art studies, technologies, production, or business; the music industry; entertainment law; or media journalism have participated in the past. Before participating, students should take the Introduction to Film course (FVD 101, Lit 110, Theaterst 171, or English 101A) or the equivalent. The Duke in LA experience includes classwork to learn about the industry, field trips to notable events and locations in Los Angeles, and the opportunity to make connections with people in the field.

The Application Process

Undergraduate students from Duke and other colleges may apply from March 1 to September 30 for the following Spring semester. Applicants submit the completed application form, an official transcript of grades, and a reference letter for review. A follow-up interview with FVD staff is then scheduled. Successful applicants will be notified by letter, and to hold their place in the program, they must return necessary forms with their tuition deposit within 30 days of acceptance into the program.
The Faculty Director will visit and meet with the accepted applicants in March and October to discuss internship and USC course interests and answer questions. Students from other universities may participate if they have a 2.7 or higher GPA at their home institution and a written permission from their academic dean.
